Resources

  • Hands-on Data Visualization by Dr. Jack Dougherty and Ilya Ilyankou was mentioned in the slides. It’s a wonderful book for thinking generally about data visualization.
  • The data analysis pipeline presented in the slide deck comes from the incredible text R for Data Science written by Drs. Hadley Wickham, Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel, and Garrett Grolemund.

Other items

  • If the “How much hotter” link inside the slide deck doesn’t work for you, please try clicking here.

  • When prompted in lecture, click here to rate these charts using Alberto Cairo’s elements of an outstanding chart.

  • I created a Quarto dashboard to display the results of the chart survey that we completed in class. Click here to view it.

Resources

  • Robin Williams’ excellent book entitled The Non-Designers Design Book outlines the C.R.A.P. (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity) method of graphic design. I read this book before I designed this website and found it very helpful, and the principles translate well to chart design.

  • Storytelling with Data by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic is an excellent resource for crafting a story with data.

  • If you’re intrigued by data visualization, Alberto Cairo’s books are excellent resources to explore further. You can find more about his work here.

  • A Washington Post article entitled “Why this National Review global temperature graph is so misleading” was described in the slide deck — you can access the full article here.

  • The hockey stick chart displayed in the slide deck was published in this report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It was initially developed by Dr. Michael Mann, a Climate Scientist, and colleagues for this research paper.
